Attendance and Absence

Parents have a legal duty to ensure their child’s regular attendance at school and the Government sets yearly attendance targets for each school.   If your child is unwell, parents are requested to telephone the school by 9.30am of the first day of absence and to confirm in writing on the child’s return to school.

If your child needs to be absent from school for any reason, an Absence Request Form must be obtained from the school office or Website, completed and returned to the Headteacher for approval before the requested start date of the absence. Authorisation is only given in line with our policy.

Absence for a holiday is not an automatic entitlement.  A request for absence due to a holiday can only be authorised by the Headteacher who will review your child’s attendance record when considering authorisation of this request.  Any request for holiday will be declined if the child’s attendance falls below 95%.

Holidays in term time are strongly discouraged and should only be taken in exceptional circumstances.

An unauthorised absence is recorded when a child is either away from school and the school have not been informed why, or if an absence request  has not been approved.

The Vale School Attendance and Absence Policy can be viewed on our Policies page or obtained from the office.
