Early Years

Welcome to our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) page. We hope you find the links and resources useful.

Our Early Years consists of three classes led by our excellent team of staff. Our children join us from a number of pre-school settings and we work closely with these settings and with parents to ensure the children’s transition to school is smooth. Our Early Years classes focus on the seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and language.
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Physical development
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design
  • Mathematics
  • Literacy

Our EYFS curriculum is based on the importance of 'play' and self-initiated learning which promotes each child's creativity and independence.

A typical day in Early Years

8.35-8.50 Welcome SPLASH
8.50-9.15 Registration and first teacher input
9.15-10.55 SPLASH
10.55-11.35 Phonics
11.35-12.15 Lunch
12.15-12.45 Lunchtime Play
12.45- 1.10 Registration and second teacher input
1.10 - 2.30 SPLASH
2.30-3.00 Story Time
3.00 End of the day

SPLASH (Self-initiated Play, Learning and Sharing time) makes up the majority of the Early Years day.  Children have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of resources and activities that support their learning and development across the Early Years curriculum. The children benefit from a rich and spacious environment both inside and out and adults work with them to extend their understanding and develop their sustained shared thinking. 

During the first term at school, the main focus is on the core areas of the curriculum (Physical development, Communication and Language, and Personal and Social development).  This enables children to quickly become safe and secure in the environment, and begin to develop good relationships with their peers. In Phonics, the children learn each letter, its patter and formation and begin to segment and blend CVC (3 letter) words, e.g. cat, sit

Early maths develops children's understanding of number.  This includes:

  • Counting - saying numbers in the correct sequence
  • Counting - tagging each object with one number word
  • Counting - knowing the last digit gives the total so far
  • Subitising - recognising small quantities without needing to count them
  • Numeral meaning
  • Conservation - knowing the total doesn't change if objects are moved
